If You Acquired Your Certificate Of Sponsorship Before April 4, 2024
You will have lower wage criteria for this visa application.
- If you received your sponsorship certificate before April 4, 2024,
- You received your first Tier 2 or Skilled Worker visa sponsorship certificate before April 4, 2024, and have held one or more Skilled Worker visas since then.
You can be paid the higher of £29,000 or the lesser going rate for your occupation if you apply to:
- Apply for this visa
- Extend your visa
- Renew your visa
- Switch to this visa (or “switch”)
Lower wage requirements will be in place only for applications submitted before April 4, 2024. These wage requirements will be revised on a regular basis, and your salary will still need to increase in accordance with the current prevailing rates each time you apply.
Each occupation code has a unique annual going rate. Refer to the table of going rates to determine the lowest rate for your job.
When You Can Be Paid Less
You can be paid between 70% and 90% of the lowest going rate for your job if you earn at least £23,200 per year and meet one of the following criteria:
- To be eligible, you must be under 26, a recent graduate, or in professional training.
- Additionally, you must have a STEM PhD level qualification relevant to your employment. If you have a PhD level qualification in another area, your pay must be at least £26,100.
You hold a postdoctoral position in science or teaching.

Salary rules vary for healthcare and education positions.
If Your Occupation Is On The Immigration Salary List
If your position is on the immigration wage list, you must be paid at least £23,200 or your full-time rate, whichever is higher.
If You Are Under 26, Studying, A Recent Graduate, Or In Professional Training
You can earn at least 70% of the lower going rate for your work if your annual salary is at least £23,200.
Your cumulative stay in the UK cannot exceed 4 years. This covers any previous stay in the UK on a Tier 2 (General) or Graduate visa.
If You Hold a PHD Degree That's Relevant To Your Career
If you hold a PhD in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), you can be paid at least 80% of the lower going rate if your annual salary is at least £23,200.
If you have a relevant PhD level qualification in any other topic, you can be compensated at least 90% of the lower going rate if your annual salary is at least £26,100.
If You Have a Postdoctoral Position In Higher Education Or Science.
You can be paid at least 70% of the lower going rate if you earn at least £23,200 each year.
Your cumulative stay in the UK cannot exceed 4 years. This covers any previous stay in the UK on a Tier 2 (General) or Graduate visa.
